ELGIN SCHOOLHOUSE STATE HISTORIC SITE – ELGIN, NEVADA
One can discover traces of Nevada’s former glory all throughout the region, and stumbling upon one of these historic sites always brings joy. If you have a passion for uncovering hidden treasures from bygone eras, then a visit to the century-old Elgin Schoolhouse site is a must.
This captivating location not only offers insights into the early inhabitants of our state, but its placement within the picturesque Rainbow Canyon enhances the experience even further. Situated in the southeastern part of Nevada, Rainbow Canyon is a haven for outdoor enthusiasts.
With its towering 3,000-foot cliffs and awe-inspiring landscapes, this area is truly breathtaking. However, its allure goes beyond natural beauty. Nestled within this pristine wonderland lies the renowned Elgin Schoolhouse State Historic Site. Although an unconventional choice for a schoolhouse, it is hard to deny the appeal of this place of learning.
From 1922 to 1967, students were welcomed into this one-room schoolhouse. While pioneers had been settling in Rainbow Canyon since as early as 1870, it was not until the 1920s that the community grew enough to justify the need for a standalone schoolhouse.
